Freeware is any copyrighted application, software or application that can be downloaded and used by the user for free. Freeware software is different from free software, as defined by the Four Freedoms outlined by the Free Software Foundation (FSF).
The first official definition of software that is free was published in 1986 and authored by Richard Stallman. It states that software is considered free if it permits users to examine, modify and redistribute the program in order to fit their requirements. The program can also be run on any computer, and it does not require a license or cost to use it.
Certain freeware programs are limited versions of software programs which can be purchased for an affordable cost or donated to a charity. These versions are often called shareware and come with many features that aren’t available in the full version.
